In Napa & Sonoma: The question every couple asks here has an answer nobody wants to give them: most working wineries cannot host your wedding. Napa County's Winery Definition Ordinance confines a winery to marketing wine and to by-appointment tours and tastings, and the county's own guidance on weddings and private parties reads plainly that weddings are not permitted and events must relate to wine education. Sonoma is more permissive but less so than its reputation suggests — since 2023 its code has read that wineries and tasting rooms shall not be rented out to third parties for events, with permits granted before then carried forward, which is why some Sonoma wineries still host and most Napa ones do not. So no wineries are listed here. What is listed is twelve hotels, inns, lodges and event spaces that can legally hold a wedding. If your heart is set on a particular winery, both counties publish their permit records — read that property's own conditions of approval rather than its marketing. Budget $8,000 to $30,000.

How to think about venue

The venue is the single largest decision on this list and usually the largest line in your budget — it sets your date, your capacity, your whole look, and often which other vendors you're even allowed to bring. Venues fall into two broad families. All-inclusive spaces bundle tables, chairs, a coordinator, and sometimes catering and bar in-house; they cost more up front but fold many line items into one. Blank-slate spaces — a barn, a field, a hall, a family home — are a beautiful empty canvas you build on; they look cheaper until you add the rentals, catering, and staffing they require. When you tour, ask what's truly included, the all-in cost with taxes and service fees, the real capacity, the rain-or-heat backup, noise curfews, parking, accessibility, and which vendors you must — or cannot — use.
