Venue

In Denver: Read this shelf as two markets separated by a drive: the city and inner-ring sites, and the foothill and canyon sites most couples are picturing. If you are looking at a Denver park, the department runs two separate tracks with different thresholds. Event facilities are reserved through the online availability calendar with a $210 nonrefundable deposit applied to the permit fee, and every permit requirement met no later than 21 calendar days before your event date; special occasion applications are due no later than 30 days before the first permitted day. The reserving party must be 18 or over, and a site can sit on the other track than you assume, since the department states that Cheesman Park Pavilion is a special occasion site, not an event facility. In the state parks the event spaces are small: two overlooks at Roxborough at twenty-five each, sixty at Staunton, one hundred at the Castlewood Canyon and Cherry Creek amphitheaters. At Red Rocks, the two spaces offered for weddings are the Trading Post Backyard at 2,200 sq ft and the Rock Room at 3,600 sq ft.

How to think about venue

The venue is the single largest decision on this list and usually the largest line in your budget — it sets your date, your capacity, your whole look, and often which other vendors you're even allowed to bring. Venues fall into two broad families. All-inclusive spaces bundle tables, chairs, a coordinator, and sometimes catering and bar in-house; they cost more up front but fold many line items into one. Blank-slate spaces — a barn, a field, a hall, a family home — are a beautiful empty canvas you build on; they look cheaper until you add the rentals, catering, and staffing they require. When you tour, ask what's truly included, the all-in cost with taxes and service fees, the real capacity, the rain-or-heat backup, noise curfews, parking, accessibility, and which vendors you must — or cannot — use.
