Officiant & Ceremony

In Miami: This is where reading ahead pays. The license is $86 from the Clerk of Court, or $61 if you complete a registered four-hour premarital preparation course — and that course also waives the mandatory three-day waiting period that applies to Florida residents. Non-Florida residents are exempt from the wait entirely, which means a couple flying in can collect a license and marry the same day while a local couple cannot. Bring government photo identification showing your legal name, date of birth and signature, and hold the ceremony within sixty days of issuance. Settle a beach ceremony early, because the rules are not uniform: county beaches exempt weddings from the special events permit and handle them as a facility reservation with the park manager, while the City of Miami Beach runs them through its special events process instead, at ninety days' notice, a $333 application, a $333 permit and a security deposit starting at $2,500. Confirm which authority governs your exact stretch of sand before you fix the hour.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
