In Honolulu: Food costs more here for the same reason everything does, and the way to spend well is to lean on what is grown and caught locally rather than flown in. Ahi, local produce, kalua pig and a whole-fish course read as generous and are not the expensive part of the menu; a mainland steak is. Decide early between a plated dinner and a served buffet with local stations, because the two price very differently at Hawaii labor rates. If your reception is at a beach or park site, confirm the caterer has worked it: no power, no water and a long carry are normal here, and a kitchen that has not done it will quote you as though it were walking into a ballroom.
