Chicago, Illinois

Attire & Accessories

In Chicago: Alterations are the local cost here, and they are measured in round trips. The listed shops sit in the city, Orland Park, Elgin and Arlington Heights, and this metro is scoped to a 35-mile buffer, so a fitting schedule that looks trivial on paper turns into several evenings in traffic between a South suburb and a city boutique. Choose a fitter you can reach on a weeknight, not one you can only reach on a Saturday. Weather is the second thing: a winter or shoulder-season date in this climate means a real coat, a real shoe and a plan for salt, slush and the walk from a parking garage to the door, and hems and trains take the worst of that. If you are marrying on the lakefront, the wind decides whether a veil is a photograph or a fight, so try it in the open before the day.
