Officiant & Ceremony

In Chicago: No dedicated officiant or ceremony service cleared the screen for this edition, so this category lists zero businesses. Below the listings sits a clearly labeled block of churches and congregations, and that is the local answer to start from; beyond it, ask the listed planners and venues who they have worked with. Then the license, which can cost you the date itself. An Illinois license is valid only in the county that issued it, and under 750 ILCS 5/207 it does not take effect until the day after issuance, then expires 60 days after it becomes effective. A Cook County license cannot be used for a ceremony in DuPage, Lake, Will, Kane or McHenry. Six counties charge six fees: Cook $60, DuPage $35 plus $1 by card, Lake $35, Will $35, Kane $32 cash only, McHenry $30. Will is appointment only, no walk-ins. DuPage takes no appointment, but the online application must be finished before you arrive and it does not issue after 4:00 p.m. Kane is cash only and warns the application takes up to 30 minutes. Cook's own marriage page states neither the wait nor the expiry. Whoever officiates must file the certificate with the county clerk within 10 days of the ceremony.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
