Detroit, Michigan

Mobile Bar / Servers

In Detroit: Be plain about this one: exactly one bar service met the standard in this region, and that is the whole of it. What prints below the listings instead is a clearly marked block of four package liquor stores. They are retailers, not bar services — they will sell you the alcohol and they will not staff your reception, and you should not read them as the category having more depth than it does. The work itself gets done in two other places here. Many venues across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb require their own in-house bar service and will not permit outside alcohol at all, so the bar question is often settled the day you sign the venue. Where the venue does allow it, caterers in this market frequently hold the liquor side themselves and will quote licensed bartenders alongside the food. Ask the venue first and the caterer second, before you plan any supply run.

Buying the beer, wine and spirits yourself

These are retail sources, not event services — nobody here staffs your bar. Where your venue allows it, buying the alcohol yourself and hiring a licensed bartender to serve it is usually the cheapest way to do this line. The rules vary by state, by county and by venue, so confirm what yours permits — and whether your setup needs its own permit — before you count on the saving.
