Kansas City, Missouri

Officiant & Ceremony

In Kansas City: This category is thin here, and the honest version of it is worth more than a padded one: one officiant service is listed, followed by a short block of area churches. Most couples in this metro find an officiant through their venue's preferred list or through their own congregation, so treat this page as a starting point rather than the whole market. The license is the harder half of the job in any case, because this metro runs two separate systems and which one applies is decided by where the ceremony is, not where you live. Missouri track first: no waiting period, both of you appear together, a Social Security number is required though the card itself is not, and the license is valid thirty days and must be used somewhere in Missouri. It is not county-bound, so a Jackson County license works statewide. Jackson County is $50, cash or card, cards carrying a 2.75% bank processing fee. Platte County, which is Parkville, Riverside, Platte City and Weston, is $51, or $61 with a certified copy, cash or card with a $2 fee and no checks. Elsewhere, expect about $50 and confirm with that county. Kansas track, and it is the one that wrecks schedules: $85.50, cash only, exact change, and a three-day wait between applying and being allowed to collect. It is then valid six months and the marriage must take place in Kansas. Fly in on Thursday for a Saturday Overland Park wedding and you have already missed it. Call your district court for its address and hours before you drive.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
