Raleigh–Durham, North Carolina

Officiant & Ceremony

In Raleigh–Durham: Two (2) dedicated wedding officiants trade actively across the Triangle — the labeled alternatives below are congregations that host member weddings, not officiants for hire. This is the category to read the researched facts on twice. North Carolina does not accept online-ordained clergy: the NC Court of Appeals in State v. Lynch and subsequent NC General Assembly guidance under NCGS 51-1.1 have narrowed the recognized-clergy category, and a friend ordained through Universal Life Church or a comparable online ministry cannot legally solemnize your marriage here — this is the single most consequential legal difference between North Carolina and its neighboring states, and couples routinely get it wrong. The statutory license fee is $60 (NCGS 161-11.4); the license is valid statewide for 60 days from issuance, with no waiting period and no blood test. Wake and Durham Registers of Deeds both moved to appointment-only booking after 2020 and the policy has not fully relaxed — start the license paperwork before you fix the hour.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
