Long Island & the Hamptons, New York

Officiant & Ceremony

In Long Island & the Hamptons: One officiant and ceremony service is listed, in Huntington, with four labeled alternatives below it that are congregations rather than officiant services. Budget roughly $300 to $1,200. A New York license is issued in person by any town or city clerk in the state, with both of you signing in front of the clerk, and outside New York City it costs $40. The ceremony may not take place within 24 hours of the exact time of issue unless a Supreme Court justice or county judge waives it, so a couple arriving Friday for a Saturday Hamptons ceremony has almost no slack. The license is valid for 60 calendar days from the day after issue, 180 for active military, and only within New York. Confirm with the issuing clerk that your officiant qualifies, especially if ordained online. Beach permits run town by town: the East Hampton Town Trustees require one for 50 or more guests or for chairs and arches, 21 days ahead; the Long Beach City Clerk asks for 30 days; Fire Island National Seashore requires a special use permit.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
