In New York City: Twelve caterers are listed, four in Manhattan, two in Brooklyn, two on Staten Island and the rest across Queens, Westchester and northern New Jersey, and the first question here is whether your room has a kitchen at all. Many lofts and galleries do not, so the caterer builds a temporary one in a service corridor and prices the ovens, power and prep space you never see. That is a real line rather than padding, and it moves more between rooms than the menu does. Ask what the service charge covers, whether any part of it reaches the staff, and what sales tax applies on top, because the per-head figure you are comparing is rarely the per-head figure you pay. If your caterer is crossing the Hudson, or coming out from the city to a Westchester or Long Island site, travel, tolls and a second truck all land somewhere in the quote. Ask where. The reference range runs $135 to $375 per person.
