New York City, New York

Venue

In New York City: Twelve venues are listed, five in Manhattan, two in Brooklyn and one each in The Bronx, on Staten Island, and out at Huntington, Sea Cliff and Woodbury. Which side of the river you book decides your paperwork before it decides anything else: a New York license may be used within New York State only, so a Manhattan-issued one works in Westchester or on Long Island and is worthless in Hoboken. The local choice is less all-inclusive versus blank slate than catering hall versus raw room. A hall quotes a per-person number that already carries staff, tables and bar; a Manhattan or Brooklyn loft quotes a room fee and hands you a rules packet. Read that packet before you sign, because load-in and load-out hours, who is paid to run the freight elevator, an amplified-sound curfew and a certificate of insurance naming the building and its managing agent are all costs that never appear on the venue invoice. Many buildings also mandate in-house catering or an approved vendor list, which quietly settles several other categories for you. The estate and garden sites at Old Westbury, Oyster Bay, Locust Valley, Briarcliff Manor, Tarrytown, Rye, Alpine and Short Hills trade the elevator problem for a guest-travel one. Budget $10,000 to $60,000.
