Cleveland, Akron & Northeast Ohio, Ohio

Officiant & Ceremony

In Cleveland, Akron & Northeast Ohio: Zero -- Ohio's probate-court structure means officiants here are rarely full-time wedding businesses, and only one service vendor made this year's list, with four congregations printed separately below as a labeled alternative for a couple who would rather book through a place of worship. On the legal side: Ohio issues marriage licenses through the county probate court, not a clerk's office, and you apply where you live, not where you marry -- a Cleveland couple marrying at a Medina barn still applies in Cuyahoga County. If neither of you lives in Ohio, you apply in the county where the ceremony will happen, and the license is then locked to that county alone. Fees vary sharply by county: Cuyahoga runs $60.00 plus a card surcharge, Lorain $57.00 cash-only by appointment, Medina $88.00 cash-only, and Portage $70.00 by appointment -- so confirm your own county's fee and process rather than assuming Cuyahoga's applies. Ohio law sets no waiting period and requires no witnesses, and the license is valid 60 days. If your ceremony is at Edgewater, Wendy Park or another Cleveland Metroparks site, that office issues its own permit separately from the license, caps ceremonies at 50 guests, and does not allow amplified sound.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
