Officiant & Ceremony

In Portland: Three officiants are listed in this category, a thin shelf for this metro, and a labeled block of congregations follows for couples who'd rather book through a place of worship. It's worth correcting a common assumption directly: Oregon does not allow a couple to self-solemnize their own marriage. State law requires the ceremony to be performed by an authorized officiant -- a judicial officer, county clerk, member of the clergy, or a licensed or ordained celebrant -- in the presence of at least two witnesses. Washington's self-solemnization rules are not confirmed here, so don't assume either side of the river works the same way; check directly with whichever state will actually issue your license before you build a ceremony plan around a friend performing it.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
