Transportation

In Salt Lake City: The canyons are why this line matters here. Big Cottonwood Canyon (SR-190) and Little Cottonwood Canyon (SR-210) carry stricter traction requirements than other roads in the state, and UDOT can impose them 24 hours before a storm begins rather than once it arrives. When the requirement is in force, all-wheel and four-wheel drive vehicles need at least M+S tires on all wheels; two-wheel drive needs 3PMSF tires on all wheels, or chains or snow socks on at least two drive wheels; and the minimum tread is 5/32 inch. A guest in a rental car on all-season tires can be turned around at the canyon mouth, which is the most common way a winter guest list quietly shrinks. If your venue is up either canyon in winter, shuttle guests in a vehicle that meets the requirement instead of trusting a caravan of rentals, and put the road you are using in writing with the operator. UDOT also refers to avalanche closure days on these roads without publishing a schedule, so build margin into the timeline and give guests a plan for getting home.
