Vermont & the White Mountains, Vermont

Officiant & Ceremony

In Vermont & the White Mountains: One officiant and ceremony service vendor is listed, in Essex Junction, with four labeled alternatives below the listings that are congregations and similar organizations rather than officiant services. Budget $200 to $750. This is the most important paragraph in the annex, because the two states in this region have opposite officiant rules and many venues sit within an hour of the border. Vermont is accommodating: any adult may register as a temporary officiant with the Vermont Secretary of State for $100 and solemnize one specific marriage, with that authority expiring when the license does. New Hampshire is not. New Hampshire does not categorically recognize online ordinations, so a friend ordained online cannot legally marry you there on that credential alone, whichever state they live in. The route there is a special marriage officiant license from the New Hampshire Secretary of State, which authorizes one named marriage; confirm the current fee with that office when you apply. If your license and your ceremony are in different states, plan both jurisdictions, and start before you fix the hour.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
